Education

Ph.D., Wesleyan University, 1991 (Ethnomusicology)

Teaching

Artist in Residence, Music Department, Wesleyan University: current

Fall semester courses: Music 110 (Introduction to South Indian Music), Music 433 (South Indian Percussion). I continued to train Aaron Paige as accompanist for Hari Krishnan’s Bharata Natyam classes. I also trained Aaron to accompany the invocatory song that opened the Navaratri Festival. A video of this excellent performance is on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwdDm3UO5WM), where it has, as of January 3, 2009, more than 63,000 views and more than 100 favorable comments. Some of these are from top musicians in the Karnatak music field.

Spring Semester courses: Music 212 (Solkattu), and Music 433 (South Indian Percussion).

Visiting Artist, Wesleyan University, 2000-2001.

I taught Music 439 (Solkattu) and Music 437 (Mrdangam), continuing the innovations I began in spring 2000. During first semester I taught Music 101 (Worlds of Music). During second semester I taught a Graduate Seminar, Tala in South Indian Music (Music 312), along with Professor T. Viswanathan.

Visiting Artist, Music Department, Wesleyan University, Spring semester 2000

I taught Music 439 (Solkattu) and Music 437 (Mrdangam), to a total of thirty-four students. I made significant innovations in both courses. Most notable of these was the addition of a seminar section to Music 437 to give all students of the drumming a background in theory and in the ways in which the drumming functions within South Indian Music.

Adjunct Music Faculty, Amherst College, 1994-2001

Visiting Artist, Music Department, Wesleyan University, 1986-87

Research Work in Progress

Transfer to digital media a set of twenty tape recordings of lessons with T. Ranganathan; these will be edited, transcribed, and compiled, and published in some form. At this point the digital transfer (to CD) is nearly half complete.

Development of a computer archive system for recordings of Karnatak music concerts. So far more than one hundred fifty concerts have been digitized, saved as MP3 audio files and archived. More than three hundred separate compositions are represented. These can be accessed quickly for teaching purposes, and have been used extensively in Music 110 and music 433

Transfer of 8mm and VHS video collection of Karnatak music performances to DVD for classroom use.
